I have recently aquired a 220L fermenting drum. I have been worried about trying to keep this big sucker warm enough in the shed so it my TPW can work its magic.
So I did this to it:
Image

Gave it a layer of bubble wrap all round. then a layer of R1.5 wool insulation batts, then a final layer of building paper.
Set it off the sheds concrete floor thru use of some timbers.
Mixed a 125L TPW up last Sunday (with the help of a $5 paint stirrer on my cordless drill) pitched the yeast at 32 deg.
let it work overnight and then, lid on and topped with 4 old large woolen blankets.
Checked it on Tuesday night and was delighted to see it still bubbling away happily.
I was concerned that the cold nights in Melbourne this week would not help it al all.
I then got overwhelmed @ work and pretty much neglected it until this morning.
Pulled off the top blankies and was very surprised to find it very warm to the touch!!
Stuck the thermometer into the wash and got 25deg!!! :happy-partydance: :happy-partydance: :happy-partydance:

Hi guys thanks for the thread.
I have an broken fridge that I hope to use for femmenting.
It seems I have a number of options to keep the ferment warm in the fridge.
We can have very cold days and nights any time during the year.
My question relates to the ferment itself in the fridge.
Yeast needs oxygen to ferment out completely while at the same time releasing Co2 so what stops the ferment going belly up when the fridge door is closed.
I searched the site and can't see this being addressed in any threads.
How do you address this?

I use a modified fridge during winter and for rum in summer, I have not addressed this, works fine without anything other than a heat lamp and thermostat. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'm with Tassie on this one. Never had a issue in my fermenting fridge and I ferment TPW and beer. If you're concerned I also use a heatbelt connected to a 240v thermostat (it has a thermo probe attached to it that slips inside a thermowell) and slip an insulated cover over the top. Works like a charm over winter. You can buy all this stuff on flea bay.

It only needs oxygen to get started. I.e. When you mix it and pitch the yeast. After that the airlock precludes oxygen anyway.

I use a low wattage light globe on a portable work light hanging in the fridge connected to an stc1000. I have the opposite problem of too cold so my fridge works.

BTW, you don't need to monitor the exact temp of the wash unless you're OCD. If you maintain the fridge interior at say 20 degrees the wash will stay at around 21 degrees (usually a degree above for me) but try and pitch close or a couple degrees below the target temp before you put it in. The temp will come up with internal heat but will take a while to come down if you pitch too hot.
