I would add some DAP if I could get my hands on it cheaply but it looks like tomato paste contains all the nutrients it needs, Im guessing the magneesium in the epsom salts helps the yeast breed?

Yep you nailed it...

Epsom salts assist yeast by providing the gear it needs to divide and grow and repair the cell wall after division.

Simple


If you want a flood of techo to validate it let me know but the above is true and correct.

The bakers yeast, lowans, etc will do fine for the wash as far as I know. Birdwatcher did his in 80L washes so it should be fine if you are using the correct upscale.

Someone else who has done larger batches may be able to chime in though, especially since there is a lot of ingredients going into this thing.

Good luck with it though. I'd love to get some containers that size. Would save so much time.

Hi valoren the recipy is for 180 Litres that is your total volume including the ingredients, so when you have mixed it all up with the hot water you just bring it up to the 180 Litre mark on your fermentor with cold and hot water to arrive at the desired temp. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yes i no it sucks when you have to mark out the barrel , but it makes things easier. ;-)

The wash calculator says you need 154.98L of water.......that is if you use the 40.5 KG of sugar thats been mentioned above.
Only problem is that according to the same calculator that's going to give you a wash of 13.2%......which is a bit high.

Thats all well and good if you have a flow meter SBB , easy way just mark your barrel.

When you do a wash all the sugar and water does not have to go into the fermenter at the start some can be added later .When it ferments the volume goes down and left with dried residue .Leave some of the water to be added later .

I was implying that maybe when your ferment has finished, that the cap has sunk leaving a residue (Krausen) and giving the illusion that the volume has dropped. :-B
How much volume are we talking here?

I got a 200l container ( olives or capers)from a bloke in Llandilo in western sydney, he had thousands, that had them on ebay, $30 I think it was, he also had 60l and i grabbed one of those as well, which I used for a molasses wash. You can calculate the volume of water by measuring the level from the bottom if its reasonably cylindrical... the little bit of angle on them at the bottom doesnt matter much, pi(3.14159 is close enough..) x radius squared x height of fill...then marking the required volume .... I've done a couple of 160l mixes of TPW that have turned out fine. No need for a heater here in summer, but otherwise I use a 80w aquarium heater...`

I know this is a fairly old post but the info is helpfull
I measured my barrel using a ten litre bucket, a stop watch and my plain old garden hose. I don't have a flow metre.
Method ...
Set up ten ltr bucket in a sturdy position get hose running flat out (I have a trigger nossel for near instant flow )
Set stopwatch going as you start water into bucket. As soon as water reaches ten ltr in bucket stop the stop watch.
Multiply this figure to the volume you want Eg 180 ltr / 10 = 18. 14 seconds for ten ltr 14x18 = 252 seconds
Extrapolate that to 4 minutes 12 seconds In your drum stop the water at 4 minutes 12 seconds . should be close enough to 180 ltrs.( Close enough for our needs any way.) Put a mark on your drum.
You could of course stop your water every 14 seconds and have your drum graduated in ten ltr marks.

Do not use my figures you need to know the timing for your own garden hose.
Also, it is important to have an instant flow, if your turning it on and off a ball valve or like mine trigger, a gate valve or normal tap is not going to give an accurate measure.otherwise leave it running and just flick out and in again at the times required.


Biggest prob I had was keeping the marks visible
Enamel paint has worked so far but you have to rough up your barrel where your putting the paint.
