Yummy's first TPW

OK this is really embarrassing but finally I used up all my Turbo yeasts and decided to have ago.

I must say after many years of using turbo's I'm a bit nervous. Doing the figures in my head ,( and the brain calculator isn't flip/flop'n to well ATM) ,I'm figuring I'm going to be down by at least 30% yield wise . The yeast and the Tomato paste have cost almost the same as two packets of turbo yeast.

Anyway ,I wouldn't be a real Aussie Distiller if I haven't had a go at this so being winter and all ,I'm hoping that it will be OK .I've got a nice little heat pad and a blanket

Sorry about the focus ,its as sharp as the brain calculator ATM :laughing-rolling:

That bakers yeast you bought will do you just shy of 4 batches. Also you can reuse your yeast bed. That's what I have done any way. For a neutral wash I don't see why you can't get 4-5 gens from your yeast bed. That means 15+ batches from your pack of bakers yeast. Also you will not need to carbon filter your product. That's not only saves you time but also money. And most importantly, you will have a better product!

Cheers Dom

Well its bubbling away quite nicely this morning and doesn't have that sickly smell coming out the airlock that the turbo does so this could be a good sign.
I'm actually quite relieved because the expiry date on the yeast was 6 months ago.

Never thought about re-using yeast cake  .Funny cause I do for Rum .

I don't reuse anything but the fermenter for neutrals, bakers yeast is cheap and you want to minimise flavours here

Thanks Crow , after what Dom said ,Now I'm totally confused on that issue

Anyway, SG was only down to 1040 yesterday after 4 days .

I've been using one heat pad shareing between to two fermenters and the temps been at 24oC .Thought this probably was OK but seems that 28 is preffered temp for TPW so I found my old heat pad.Stuck one under each fermenter.Temp this morning is 27.6 C so that looks better .

Crow is saying not to use your yeast bed for washes you are going to use for neutral spirits. I not very experienced in neutral washes but I guess reusing your yeast bed can contribute to flavor l, which you don't want in a neutral spirit. That's my bad for giving you the wrong information.

No worries Dom .Its all good discussion :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Since I've upped the heat ,its cracking along .Passed the SG 1000 mark and heading for dry

Not the fastest wash but definitely the cleanest smelling. The family is impressed. The house does not smell of "that yeasty shitty stench" in fact they didn't even know I had it going until I told them :-D

Might have a convert here

Nice one yummy, what's even better is that if you add tomato paste and yeast to the wife's shopping list, you won't have to head to the brew shop for a turbo... :teasing-tease:

And you can do about 3-4 TPW for the cost of a turbo!

Bit of an update.

Its been a month since I started this .

Of the two barrels ,one ended up at 995 sg the other @ 990sg . They both had the same amount of sugar and the starting sg was the same for both.
I can only put it down to maybe not an even dollop of Tomatao paste and that half way through fermenting I found my old heat pad and they got one each .They are different although they are both rated at 30W

Anyway the washes both cleared naturally better than I have ever had with Turbos and turbo clears.

So its into Mr Fuggly for a strip.

Mr Fuggly is my Still spirits boiler that I use on my VM. I thought I'd give him a hurry up .I stuck my 2 ring gas burner under it with the element running as well.

This is the fasted strip I have ever done .Got to get some Mac elemnts in my KEG :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Brewers kitchen 004.jpg

So I think this wash smelt really clean compared to a turbo wash.It was very much like a wine smell wise.It even tasted like wine .

The strip smells nice ,seems maybe more heads smell but the tales is nowhere near as offensive as Turbo tales .

Hopefully get to run this through the VM this weekend

You barstards :laughing-rolling:

Son run over a fucking nail and popped the tyre in the ride-on so thought its time for two new rear tyres cause they were fucked anyway ,next week :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Anyway Put the strip through the VM. It was a bit of a fuck up. Stripped down to 10% where normally only go down to 20% ,then watered down to 30% instead of 40% :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

Then had to turn off still midway for various reasons ,then missed tails cut as there was less AVB and it happenede sooner that I predicted .

But despite all these Fuckups the Nuetral is Bloody nice :handgestures-thumbupleft: Doesn't have that sickly sweet that the turbo has .Almost has a bitter taste but that could be due to my fucked cuts .

Got another started today :handgestures-thumbupleft:

No Clearing agent just time . :handgestures-thumbupleft: Started it a month ago . I did have a peek after 2/12 weeks and it was still murky.

Still cleared up better than a Turbo after the same time .

Gave Yummy mummy two shot glasses tonight .One had TPW vodka the other some Turbo Vodka I had left .

Guess which one she said tasted like shit. :))

Yeah 1 2 , the whole TPW thing has been very similar to making wine .The only thing I worry about with leaving it for too long is getting a yeasty flavour in it.

Was always the rule in wine making to do the first Rack off the yeast as soon as possable to stop yeast flavours ...but then again, were not drinking the wash :laughing-rolling:
