Unwanted liquorice aniseed in neutral

Postby vqstatesman » Mon Sep 02, 2013 8:54 pm

Hello all,

As the subject suggests I have an unwanted liquorice aniseed flavour in ALL my washes.

I'm running a t500, mostly TPW washes, tried allbran and of course Turbos. They all seem to have a liquorice / aniseed hint to them. I have tried rerunning my washes multiple times to rid the flavour but with no luck :(

Please note the flavour isn't ouzo like in strength but still present none the less.

When mixing up my neutral to make liqueurs its not a big issue due to strong flavours of essence/sugar etc. When I attempt to make any type of whiskey/scotch/bourbon like drink (essence or chips) its rather off putting.

Any suggestions / guidance would be appreciated.

Try putting some copper mesh into the vapour path, I am assuming you have ceramic saddles as packing and are making cuts to separate the hearts,

Contact Reactive Carbon will definately clean things up,
But better to look to your process and find the cause....

My guess is dirty packing in the column or off tastes in the water you are using to dilute the spirits to drinking strength.

T500s have a layer of copper saddle type things at the top of the column above the ceramic saddles as standard procedure.
You could be right about the ceramic saddles needing washing though, they can get pretty filthy if your not stripping first.

Just wondering if you did a cleaning run?

Theres lots of components, saddles etc, that may be carrying "factory" crap. :puke-huge:

Time for a vinegar cleaning run followed by a steam only clean short run I suspect.
