Molasses and flies

Postby OzKev » Sat Jan 04, 2014 9:21 am

Last batch of molasses I got has small fruit flies in it. :crying-blue:

I didn't know there was flies in the molasses and added some to an existing fermenting wash. At the end of the wash when it was time to distill it I noticed them in there and plucked out what I could. I ended up running it anyway. I thought maybe they just got in, so I dumped the left over yeast cake and started up a fresh ferment using the same molasses. This morning I was adding some sugar to the wash and noticed the buggers again. I checked the original molasses and sure enough I found the source. The place I got it from must have them in their tank. :scared-eek:

I assume if I call the place I got it from they will say it's acceptable in a stock feed grade product. Has anyone else had flies in their molasses? Is this a problem?

I cant see it affecting the brew... as long as you are not sensitive to these things.

Don't worry about the flies, they won't drink much :laughing-rolling:

Hi Kev,
the fruit flies could potentially cause an infection.
but if the previous ferments with this Molasses were ok then I wouldn't stress over it :handgestures-thumbupleft:
