Ive used raw, to great success but not brown.... I heard brown sugar is white refined sugar thats steeped in cane juice / molasses , thats why you see it in some HD rum recipe's

Talking cane sugar, raw is the first crystals in the sugar refining process. Whereas, as above, brown sugar is sugar that has been refined to white and then molasses added back. The main difference is raw will have other impurities which also impart flavor. These flavors may or may not suit the product.

If you are mashing, why the sugar at all?

You are right about why the sugar at all. I have just been told and sought of convinced to use it starting out (I'm only new at this)but I'm going to get away from using it. I'm going to try the brown sugar but to see if any flavour change good or hopefully not bad come through.
