How long can I leave wash after fermentation?

Postby Johnny B Shiney » Fri Aug 01, 2014 7:51 pm

Hey Fellas
Im going to have a crack at my first corn flake wash and then UJSM.
Recipe will be something like
800g corn flakes
4 vita brits
5 kg sugar
80 to 100 grams yeast
a tablespoon or so of citric acid.

I may have to leave this wash for up to a week after fermentation, will this be ok?

Hope this isnt a stupid question and thanks in advance for any replies.

Recipe looks alright mate :)

If you keep it sealed, wash is good for months after it's finished fermenting (if need be... You're better off trying to get it through the still within a few weeks if possible.) :handgestures-thumbupleft:

:text-+1: tipsy ...half a teaspoon is more like it...problems of too high acid levels will compoun with adding backset next generation.

BTW..a small a mount of acid to keep the pH around 4.5-5.5 keeps th yeast happy and reduces chance of infection ..this will help it "keep".
But too much acid will make it impossable for the yeast to work and a stalled fermentation will happen.

An unopened bottle of wine will keep for years...same aplies to a wash.Dont keep lifting th lid and it will be fine

If you mix your sugar, cornflakes and wheetbix with boiled water(smoking hot!) it should kill any bacteria they may be on them, top up with clean water into a sterile fermenter it will last months and months :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I reckon if they are good enough to eat they shouldn't do to much harm in a wash. Id leave the little buggers alone and just ferment em up.

This is true and you may get away with it forever and it's not much to lose if you don't :handgestures-thumbupleft:
But the human body is built to handle bacteria that your wash or yeasties don't
I spent the first 5 years of my working life working in grain handling equipment on farms and stock feed joints to cereal and muesli bar factories and I can tell you they are far from steril environments, although they certainly try :laughing-rolling:
It's easy to boil some water for a guarantee
anyway I'll shut up now :teasing-neener:

I have had had washes left for several months for various reasons and they distilled up nicely Mccrum and BWKO so always run it the BWKO was really sweet and creamy it aged in the ferment or it seems! :handgestures-thumbupleft:
