I double distilled my last 100ltr TPW wash, I will be doing this every time. It's a fantastic drop and the missus and her drunken mates love it...

This stuff is amazing, I've given some to heaps of people and they can't get over the quality of it, its been compared to top shelf vodka's. I know I'm really proud of it and I'll probably be doing this way in the future.

I really think you sum up the benefits here mate.... double run results in world class vodka, if cut properly....the extra effort is amply rewarded.

This thread is very interesting.

Is the doc saying that those of us with pot stills should -
Collect low wines
1st spirit run making cuts
2nd spirut run using what you kept from the 1st spirit run

Is this correct?

Cols No need to do three runs with a pot still...simply strip without cuts then a second run with cuts for the spirit. So two runs only.

Having double distilled TPW through my 3" pot I can say that if you want anything resembling neutral you'll need to do more than that... Was drinkable, but had a decent tomato tinge to it!

Agreed Zak TPW is a wash for fractional distillation...for neutral. But some people only have pot stills and may wish to try their hand at TPW which with oak will still make a whiskey better than any HBS cordial ... It is just not particularly suited to the purpose. Better a grain wash.

Very timely information for me. Just got a 2" pot still to attempt my first stripping run prior to putting a TPW through my trusty T500. Looking forward to the results!!
I am looking to put 2 x 25 litre TPW's through stripping runs. From what I can tell I will end up with about 10 or so litres from each which will give me 20 litres to run through the T500. Sounds straightforward I hope!!!

I get around 5l per strip although it needs watering down anyway, 2 x 25l strips is perfect for a spirit run :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Not sure if you could call a double pot stilled TPW on oak a 'whiskey'... Maybe a woody tomato vodka?

I put some double distilled TPW on toasted american oak, after only 6 weeks I drank some on the weekend and it was really nice.

Is it whiskey?? Probably not, but VAT 69 is whiskey, and I know which I would rather drink.

compared to HBS cordials... it would be better...but if you read the post I do not advocate using TPW as a whiskey wash better a grain wash. TPW is a neutral wash.... But rendered neutral a TPW is capable of being aged on oak... It will lack complexity ...but will still be better than HBS cordial.Whiskey it is not, by definition. But there again either is HBS cordial. Nor anything you distil that is aged less than 2 years.

I'm really intrigued by this and also as a relative beginner a tad confused.
So would I use my T500 to do a run, water the product down and run it again?
Sorry if that's a silly question, I'm aiming for as clean as I can get.

Ideally you'd use a pot still to strip a few washes first, then re-run through the T500, but 2 runs through a reflux will work, it'll just take longer :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks Zak, I'll certainly give it a go.
We've just moved, and I think a pot will be on the menu when settled and a little more "cash rich"

You do a strip run
Then you do a spirit run
Cut the spirit, keep heads and tails in a keg or other labelled fients vessel
Then you do a feints run (spirit run of feints) when you have enough diluted to 40%
Cut and discard heads and tails from the feints run

I'm now in the position to comment on some of my own questions.
A double distill in my T500 makes for awesome spirit. Unbelievably clean. Words fail me.
Added to that, I've found a huge advantage in using dextrose instead of Woolies, Aldi, Coles sugar. The yield is increased by easily 1/4.
Ive only run one dextrose wash, the second (Dextrose TPW) is fizzing away at the moment, so no proper "scientific" results.
All I do know is that for the very clean stuff I'm after there's no going back for me from
1 very clean saddles in the column (next run will be the first with the new stainless steel saddles and extra copper saddles.)
2 dextrose TPW
3 double distilled.
