Clearing the fog

Hi Guys,
Well it's summer & hot & I have a sugar wash running. It should be finished but it won't clear. I've added 3 small packets of Gelatin (beer finnings) still no change, seems the yeast is consuming it as a sugar. I'm 140km from the nearest brew shop so I can't get my hands on some "turbo clear". Any thing else I can try, the hydrometer is at 990. :text-thankyoublue:

Turbo clear? Are you making spirits or fuel? :laughing-rolling:

What wash recipe did you make?

.990 its done

How long has it been clearing for?

Did you rack it off of the fermenter or letting it settle in the fermenter

It wont "clear" but solids will settle to the bottom. No need for it to be transparent, just free of solids. If you have let it sit for a few days or a week rack it off and run it

Okay, well you may have answered my problem, It's just cloudy! The 1st & 2nd brews were "Commercial" So I'd expected the wash to be well CLEAR!
If this is not an issue I'll start my run.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

If it is a tpw it will stay a pinky orange color kinda cloudy.

Run it, make really good cuts, don't get greedy by keeping too much heads and tails and you will have a good product.

If you have made "commercial" stuff in the past, the tendancy is to keep as much as possible. Resist the temptation and only keep the good stuff. Make a foreshots cut, a heads cut a hearts cut and a tails cut. You will be happy with the end result!!

Have fun and get it into the boiler!!!

Thanks CH3CH2OH,
I now understand the difference between fermenting Hotch & Beer!
Beer needs to be clear.....Spirits just need to be .990

Not quite mate a TPW might settle out at .990 but when you start doing cereals or grain washes that won't be the case.

There is no rush, you could leave it there in the fermenter for 6 weeks, it will get clearer and there are no side effect like there is with beer :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

good point 1 2many, thanks for clarifying that!!

Lots of other factors to consider when you venture out of the TPW game.

I ran it thru last night, finished around 12.30 am. I got a good yield @ 96% proof. I took out 200ml of fore shots first!
Today I cut & mixed seven 700ml bottles of Malt Whiskey & Scotch. Should keep me quite for a while! :D

Is the 200m of fores the only thing you chucked away?
