2 Row Barley question

Hey all,

I came across a list of Australian Barley types and was hoping one of you might know about some or all of them?

Baudin
Buloke
Commander
Fitzroy
Flagship
Gairdner
GrangeR
Schooner
Scope
Westminster
Wimmera

The only thing I know is they are all 2 row and are graded in 3 categories. :think:

Reckon there are a few older ones in there but I know one of the latest is the commander which apparently has a very high diastatic power and i reckon someone here mentioned it is going to be a replacement for something for all grain? May have been BT1 I reckon.

If your getting grain straight from the source you need to know what grade it was making, you want malting barley not feed barley if possible :handgestures-thumbupleft:

It certainly is quite a diverse market with most of the malted barley heading overseas (or so I have been told) because of the high diastase and high fermentability. Apparently the bulk of beers produced in Australian are now low alcohol and this type of barley is not suited.

I have discovered that the Buloke (pronounced Bull-Oak) is one of the best for distilling and in Graincorps words " Specific quality characteristics for which Buloke represents an improvement compared to the current malting varieties, are higher malt extract, diastase and fermentability levels". There seems to be a lot of info around the varieties above but the Buloke seems to now be the grain of choice for Aussie Farmers.

I used to use bb galaxy with great success but haven't found a replacement since they stopped making it

Fair call.. screenings may not vary but protein can vary from load to load across paddocks,

I know some of these variety's.

If i may add to your post...
In recent years a practice call dessication may have been used for weed control........

If its fed to stock the with holding period i think is 60 days.....

Scary part is this is not an off label thing i hope its been stopped.

They used glyphosate and paraquat on crops farmers where told that they broke down in the soil glyphosate was so safe you could mix with your hands. paraquat is highly toxic when applied and will kill if drunk with no hope of survival so if can not find residue must be safe to apply but now they can test and find residue so now is not safe have a look on internet ,

As i said before avoid using dessicated grain at all costs.

Never listed any chemicals for a reason. what the lab coats say today is safe. Will kill you tomorrow. :laughing-rolling:
