Ok, so it's not worth shelling out for the $250 ones if I'm only going to be doing a few kilos here and there you reckon?

I would dearly love to have one of those 3roller Crankenstien mills and one day I will.
For the moment, I will just use the El-Cheapo coz I'm just getting started in the AG dept.
As I grow int this hobby, so will my kit ;-)

Fair point too kimbo. I've ordered one of those like you suggested, that'll see me through for a while I reckon. I've got a 50L esky here to mash in which should do the job for the time being. Just need a few more fermenters and I'll be half set :laughing-rolling:

G'day DaveZ. If your near Mackay I just got my first batch of grains from Mackay Rural Supplies (CRT/Farm HQ). 20kg cracked corn and 20kg wheat for under $40. Beauty. As for malted grains I can't help. Only putting down first grain mash today

I've just re_read this post and found some info I would have to strongly disagree with.
Malting your own grain is not hard and not a lot of rooting around. There are numerous threads on methods you can use As for toxins I'm assuming ppl are refering to bacteria that produce LSD , follow some very simple directions and this won't happen Its very unlikely in any case and improperly stored grain is much more likely to get that sort of result

To use malted corn as yeast in corn whiskey how much is needed in say a 50l wash. Does the fermenter need to be open top for it to work? Is the malted corn a yeast or does it attract a specific type of wild yeast? :ugeek:
