Ended up with 3.5 at 60% 5.25 at 40% not bad for $23 worth grain and enzyme. So long as it tastes good(pretty sure it will) then it will be a regular thing.and I will get better effeciency :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Well done. Considering you lost 30%, that yield should also be greater!!

Ok so trawling other forums and I have found a serious flaw in my mash tun design. The ball valve circled in red should be on the rims input circled blue. Reason being if the valve gets shutoff or the lauter gets stuck steam pressure can build and explode :scared-eek: :scared-eek: :scared-eek: If its on output the steam can escape and worst that can happen is element blows. :handgestures-thumbupleft: So I now have it on the rims input. Stay safe :D

Another unmalted + enzyme barley mash today slightly different mash schedule with promising results

Barely lot 2 method 2
Grind barley finer 1.025mm gap set off marking on malt muncher.

Soak rice hulls overnight.Add 40l water adjust ph to 5.5 heat to 95c add grain and hulls. Hold at 88c 2hrs to gelatinize. Add 20ml rye enzyme hold 2 hrs brix 12. Drop to 70c beta glucan rest(break up the gummy stuff) drop to 65 add amg enzyme rest 3 hrs (atentuation)? Drop to 63c add another 20ml rye enzyme after 3hrs 15 brix.. will post gravity and volume in fermenter tomorrow gunna let it sit in insulated tun overnight see what happens..

You done any mashs yet rcal?

Gravity crept up to 1.068 in the mash tun overnight. Since this was a full volume mash I Heated the tun temp to 75 and just sparged, and drained over 1.5hrs, with the amount I lose to grain absorption in my case 10.5 litres. Ended up with 36l in the fermenter (4l loses in my system is about right) at temp corrected 1.063 a whopping 84.93% effeciency very happy and will keep this mash schedule for the rest of my unmalted barley mash's :happy-partydance:  :music-deathmetal: :D :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Nice work bluc.. glad it's working out for you. Gotta be happy with that efficiency :happy-partydance:
Are you planning to steer away from mashing with malted grain or just do a bit of both?

When comfortable with unmalted and all the theory is stuck in my head I will also do some malted stuff. But as long as unmalted tastes better then sugarhead it will be my main drink :handgestures-thumbupleft: ..i reakon adjusting ph on my water before mashing was the missing bit of the puzzle... :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Do you reckon this would be something that would help mashing with malted grain as well?

Good to know bluc... ill keep in mind for my next mash. Just waiting for things to slow down on the farm and some spare time to become available :laughing-rolling:
Just out of curiosity, what ph meter you using?

Eh Bluc I've also got one of cheap yellow ph meters and I have found before using I calibrate it in some ph4 liquid then in some ph7.1 liquid making sure the sensor gets a good wash inbetween tests. Over time if the sensor isn't kept in liquid it will run out of calibration. One can buy the ph solution easily and by storing it in the fridge it will last for 12 months or more.

:text-+1: calibrating is important, pH is a logarithmic scale and slight drifting of the device can mean very different measurements.

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.
