Thanks Bluc. Thinking of doing another all peated all grain, we found that blending it with a bit of the NGW made it go a lot further and didn’t really knock too much of the peate flavour out. Just wondering if we did an Ag on plain malted grain if that would add something extra. It’s an excuse to sit and drink a few beers while the grains steep anyway if nothing else.
Looking forward to seeing how this cornflakes mash goes. Hopefully it pulls some corn flavour through for something a bit different. I am not into bourbon enough to bother mashing corn.

I did staright malted un peated grain and peated grain. While I prefer the peated the un peated is better imo than sugarheads or cereals mashs I have done.
I watched a vid on youtube and a bloke mashed kellogs cornflakes added to warm water and added malt and got good conversion. Something I am going to try. I am determined to find a good way to mash corn with a false bottom and sparge rather than on the grain. Much cleaner and less labour intensive.

Love mashing barley such a clean and easy process once you work out the details..I just need to find someone near by with a heap of chooks to deal with the spent grain :laughing-rolling:

Hah. Tried that... thought I’d be doing this lady a favour... silly chooks stopped laying!

She thought I poisoned them or got them all pissed!! And was so upset with me... turns out it was just a change in diet... but she won’t take anymore ... no more free eggs... :crying-blue:

On a brighter note: my Rye AG has completed 1 month in my 3L barell... hanging out for the end of second month! Have already tested it, very spicey! Not sure if that’s my cup-of-tea!

How well do the 3l barrels work easy do the waste much spirit? over oak or other nasty side effects? 3months in 10l does wonders to rum interested to know how smaller barrels go. For short time aged stuff..was considering a 5l one for short term all grain stuff but not if the angels are gunna drink 1l or more on me..I doubt I could afford keep any bigger full. :D

It’s my first time with a 3L barell... guess you can call me a 3L Virgin :teasing-tease: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

Bugburner used his for some CFW and after 7 weeks it was like nothing I’ve ever tasted! Unbelievable colour, aroma and taste!!!
I’m hoping for something similar!

Tell you the truth, am hanging out for something bigger because I’m struggling to get it right to have enough to fill it and maintaining it. As for losing liquid, I can’t say as that it does. But I soaked it 3 days in our NF water (the good stuff) so that it doesn’t leak...

Blue, sorry to hear your grain is running out! I no longer have cause to visit Barrett burston so my supply is getting low aswell.
Maybe a group buy through craftbrew is the way to go as orders over 20bags get a massive discount!

Thought i would share my latest adventure :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Lot 5 all grain corn
8kg cracked corn ground finer
6kg barley
900g rice hulls.
Add 8kg corn to 40l boiling water.92.8c in tun 87 after corn/hulls added. Let steep overnight till temp at 68. Start 09.30pm friday 5.15am saturday 75c 8.45am 70c and thick as virtually solid in the mash tun stirred well to reduce temp 9am temp 68c added small amount malt to loosen up mash and release some liquid. 9.30 67/8 c Added rest of 6kg barret burston ale malt stir well seal back up. 10.10 not happy with grain bed liquid level. Added approx 4l water at 70c much happier with grain bed temp stable at 62.5. Next time will go to 45l strike water which it should have been in first place. gravity at 10.53am 18.5 brix 1.0763. 11.25am 20brix 1.083 1.00pm stable at 20brix 1.083. Starting sparge, for fun will cold sparge to 45l total volume. Got 38l 13brix 1.0526. Rookie mistakes didnt mix corn and hulls well enough definat layer of corn=slow sparge. Not enough strike water didnt allow for dead space or losses or slightly thicker mash so about 6l short..finished sparging 5.20pm. Confident will better that next gen.48% efficency.

Notes: I think my biggest mistake was not mixing the hulls with the corn well enough I carefully emptied the mash tun and While I estimate 6ish kg of corn was well spread and mixed with hulls and barley about 2kg was like a thin layer of saturated clay across the false bottom which caused the slow sparge. I also didnt calculate losses and alao strike water correctly.
I got good conversion by steeping the corn overnight. Just shithouse removal of sugar from tun. I reakon I wont cold sparge ever again I had issues with sparging on all barely as well. And found moderately hot slow sparge the way to go.

I still ended up with something worth fermenting. So 4 more gens to go will post back as I go. Will keep all backset and grain for sour mash sugar heads. First all grain corn whiskey is going crazy using safspirit american whiskey yeast. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hey bluc my hot tap comes out at just under 60c and I find this perfect for sparging. I set up a hose from the laundry taps and direct into the tun when sparging.
Hot water definitely helps keep viscosity down and the hot tap isn't hot enough to denature enzymes if they are still doing the last bit of starches.

Did you run it right down to tails? Looks like you were only chasing 2.36L pure which wouldn't put you too far from the ballpark for 65%...

Yea last two definately tails. I normally dont run low just a couple bottles past when I detect tails. Taste abv fogging sight glasses etc. The sugarhead off the all grain , grain .I ran straight after was also light on. Be blowed if I know where leak is I alwas check over with a mirror at start and then again during run..I should know better :violence-smack:
