One of these little fleabay-beauties! We spared no expense even kept the blue abrasion protection on to reduce the wear and tear ...

Left field idea, could you run the mash through a grain mill over a sieve instead of sparging?
I think that's how they make cornflakes

Not while its wet... that stuff is worse than klag-glue...

Part of the process is to almost boil the corn so it 'gelatinises' = big pile of goo...

Found an easy way to separate the corn from the wash!

Wrap it up in a sheet and put it into the washing machine on spin cycle! Best to do a couple of empty rinses to get the soap out of the pipes... the let it pump the wash straight into your FV!

Not sure if your taking the piss or not? Did you actually do it?

I reckon it would be a great way to centrifuge it out, not sure on the life span of your washing machine though.

Nah mate, can't even get to the Dunny anymore (its inside the Laundry) without getting the third degree! Silly person I am, I mentioned my idea, sorta as a joke... got a sudden headache :violence-smack: she apparently thinks I was being serious... :D

I liked the idea initialy but working with the corn today, I recon it would gum-up the works inside relatively quickly. Using a washing machine, that is! That doesn't mean it isn't workable! Would be cool to get your hands on an older machine - it does need to pump it anywhere, just needs to gravity-feed out of the bottom and can be collected from there...

If you try it, I'd like to see the results! Would be interesting!

Have you seen the spin mop bucket? Bunnings sell one half decent centrifuge perhaps it would work..

Line it with some woven stainless mesh first in a couple of layers.
Greater filtration of solids from liquids.

Installed a magnetic drive pump onto the mash tun today and it's bloody excellent no more buckets for this little black duck.
It's also able to be easily disconnected and used as a transfer pump from fermenter to boiler!
Changed grind from 1.1mm to 1.2mm and now the sparging is flying along with only a small hit on efficiency.

I've seen someone do it on the web somewhere. Cant remember where.
Ended up with a laundry or shed painted in grain. Apparently it lost its balance and threw itself around in a not so pleasant manner though he had removed the outer metal casing of the machine first.

Yeah I have seen the same one, didn't it work in the end tho?

Balancing the barrel would be 'Interesting'... but you could do it in a drama that has a central shaft, secured on both ends...

At home we use a front loader (in our opinion it washes better) but I would most likely start off trying this with a top loader as they are more readily available second hand, easier to load with a mash... would have to bolt the sucker down to the floor, tho...

From memory I think it worked fine for seperation it spat grain all over the room when he tried to sparge it or was that a different one.
Coffee addict do you have any issue with temp falling to low without a rims tube when circulating with a pump? :-B

Nah I didn't notice any drop in temp. It's only a short piece of tube and the benefit to the wort quality I think will be worth it.
Next mash I'll go down to 1.1mm grind and hopefully pick up the slight loss in efficiency. It should handle it without getting stuck. I think the stuck sparges I had was a result of lots of paint stirrer/drill mixing which isn't as needed with the pump circulating the wort. This was my lowest sg @1060 normally around 1070.

Yep would love to see a vid of a sack of wet mash, maybe we could pass a hat around to re-gyprock ya laundry afterwards. I've done pillow cases of green malt in the spin dryer and that kind of works but is damn hard on the machine (plus doesn't fully dry it) so I shit canned it as a bad joke.
