Zak's Sugarfree Saga

Had a spare minute yesterday arvo... this keg was looking at me funny so I chopped its head off. This will become my new mash tun/fermenter.

Plan is to have a crack at Brendan's Simple AG Bourbon, and probably do some BIAB single malts...

As usual I'm in no rush, just marking a place so Bushy and co can harass me into getting it done.

Well I'll jump on board and start the harassing.

Brew shops sell false bottoms that fit kegs perfectly it'll increase efficiency and then you'll never use sugar again.

Now fit a tap and a false bottom and get cracking... See what I did there? :laughing-rolling: :violence-stickwhack:

Check out Beer Belly in Pooraka. Best price around for falsies and they have all the grain you need and they crush it too.

Get yourself a bazooka while you're at it, Just another's cheap piece of kit to keep grains and shit out when you're transferring wort from your mash into the fermenter.

You going to insulate it Zac or run a recirculating system? If so, RIM or HERM?

Just going to insulate it... I'm running real short on room here, so I don't want any to complicate things. I realise it's not ideal, but I'm not planning on doing heaps of AG... just want dip my toe in for now and see what I can do.

Haha I think AG is a bit like having a bubbler. It's sort of a pinical that everyone feels obligated to reach one day. I've been doing AG beers for a while. It's all a bit of fun, but your right, it is just more ways to spend time and money and space on the gear! It's pretty quick and simple making rum and cfw in a good old simple pot still!
I'd recommend making a few ales. If you cock it up, you can disstill it...

There's light yrs between sugar heads and all grain IMHO. The 1month old all grain in my Barrel is already way ahead of 9grain cereal wash that was in it for 7 or 8 months prior. So much better infact that the old stuff is now for guests lol

Eh Zac,
Nice to see your taking the plunge using a 50 litre keg as I have been thinking of doing the same thing, that was until I got that 250 litre copper water heater with a 3kw element.

Now to see this baby born I should be getting a new argon bottle bery soon ( off the back of a truck so don't know what size :)) ).

I reckon you should bring up the keg and all the bits as there will be some tig welding to done to get this new project of yours happening. We do know about past projects don't we and I don't want to be called Bushy MK2 either :))

So mate up to you but after all we don't want to see another arajag do we now :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

Scored a camping mat this morning, which a quick google tells me should be good for insulation... I'm going home this weekend so I'll grab some sisalation(?) as well for an outer layer.

How fine a mesh does a false bottom need to be?

Fine enough to stop grains obviously.
1mm aperture or something.

Should be enough here for a couple of laps of the mash tun, boiler and my fermenter :happy-partydance:
