When talking strike water. If someone says to do a mash thickness of 2.5 do you just double times grain weight by 2.5 or do you have to add extra water as well to compensate for grain absorption?

I meant just times grain weight by 2.5..

I don't compensate for absorption, 1 use 3L per kg then top up to desired amount when sparging if required. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I went to the trouble of calculating for 1l / kg of grain absorption bluc, but in the end, wound up with too much wash. The grain simply didn't absorb that much liquid. We had full conversion, well, by that I mean the iodine test proved negative, so I don't think mash time of 1 hour was too short, so I think the 3 to 1 and then top up later is probably the go too.

This works out to be the same anyway... but I've been following Tas's example and it's been giving me consistent results.

Still figuring out the sparging so that we end up with a SG of 1.070 ... still working on this!

Coffee reakons to sparge to 1.010 coming off the grain bed not sure what that gives in fg.
