All Grain Using Peated Malt......Help.

Postby Divey » Thu Jul 19, 2012 11:49 am

I have purchased a bag of Bairds Medium Peated Malt with the expectation of making an all grain wash. I have searched all over the place without any success trying to find a recipe using the Peated Malt either by itself or with some other Malted barley.

Is there anyone here that can steer me in the right direction as to an all grain recipe using some or all of the stuff. :?: I don't have a problem crushing, mashing and sparging as I've been doing all grain beers for many years now but I'm certainly having trouble finding a recipe to use this stuff.

Thanks for that Frank, I had seen and read that post before, however, I wanted to use all grain and not extract. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Where did you source the peated malt from?

The mob that we use for our beery bulk buys doesn't stock bairds - only simpsons and they don't do a peated malt

Also what's a sack running at?

Just found that ESB stocks Chateau Peated (Smoked) for $65 per sack

http://www.esbrewing.com.au/chateau-peated-smoked.html

Here are the specs - seems to have the same amount of phenols are Bairds Medium

No worrys at all Divey and good luck, please keep us posted (I too would like to know more about price, availabilty etc of Bairds peated).

Re using extract verses all grain, IMHO, I'll pinch a quote from Harry (I trust he wont mind)
"With distilled spirits only a 75yo Highlander could pick it, and he wouldn't say 'the nae' if the dram was free". ;-)

Sorry for the hijack but does anyone know where to buy peated malt in SA or Adelaide?

Bill at Brewmaker is trying to chase some up for me and Beerbelly don't stock it.

Yeah have heard of them a lot before will give them a call tomorrow, there is also a private guy from that Aussie Home Brewer that carried a lot of gear, will have to get his details off a mate though.

Bill from Brewmaster got back to me 25kg for $120, that sound about right? Sounds a lot more than that ESB place that you can order online? I am assuming their "sack" is a 25kg sack for $65?

Yep a sack is 25kg.

They only courier 25kg to Sydney metro. I'm gonna stop in next time I'm heading up.

Zwag I ended up buying 20 kg of peated malt from grain and grape online, cost about $80 dlivered. They also carry all the normal beer malts as well.

It is also good that you can buy all the grain at whatever quantity you want in 1 gram increments and it gets cheaper the more you buy.

I will see how it gets delivered but I also ordered it split into smaller bags at no extra charge
