Yes and no. Yes when you find them they're about $4 for 6 and the buying process is similar to other things.
No they're not the easiest thing to find. I couldn't find them anywhere online, just check a few Asian food stores and ask for yeast balls for making rice wine. There's no way I could have found them by just walking around the shop.

Did an internet search no mention of where to buy in Australia found a couple of interesting sites

Out of curiosity, what is the fermentation book you are reading? Always looking out for more info to help my learning :)

yeah like I said, no sites I could find sold them, just need to wanted into a few Asian supermarkets.

It's called "the art of fermentation" great read, it covers heaps of different foods that can be fermented for flavor and nutrition. Definitely worth a look.
