Ok here's the rub the BIL have bought grain and started a UJSM but his grain is full of weevils. Reckon before he's used all the grain it will be reduced to flour so does anyone know how to kill them without wrecking the grain

I was talking about 2 x 3.5 tone hoppers , but that was a bakery , but once you have them can be a pain , but if you don't mind the extra protein . :D

If its only a small ammount, maybe suffocation? by sealing or with Co2?
Wouldn't get the larve, but might stop the critters.

Failing that, ferment it. Drown the buggers. Then cook them in a still.

Depends on how much you got Crow, small amounts,I think there is some stuff made from pyrethrum, you put the grain in a drum, pour the pyrethrum onto a rag then drop it I to the drum and seal up the lid, don't know if it leaves an off flavour, chooks and shit don't seem to mind, better than using the old faithful phostoxin :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

they wont hurt the wash ferment it before they make the efficiency shit. As said bulk grain is frozen for months, small amount not worth worrying. I have used grain with weavils the LHBS was selling some that had them and was frozen to kill them off for like $1.20 a kg and eff was the same as they got them early. There is worst things in hop plugs then weavels in grain :)) see squashed bettles and stuff in them :shifty:

The freezer idea sounds like a winner my sister wants hism to just take it back but if it was in all the grain well what it gets replaced with won't be any better I'd think

Wouldn't they just be speeding up the process?, ferment them?.

Party hire places and camping stores will sell dry ice, or if you have an ice supplier near you, they usually have it as well.

Crow,
What is the gain stored in currently?

One trick I have seen if the container is not too large and relatively air tight, is to put a glass with a lit candle just on top of the grain and close up. If the container is airtight the burning candle consumes the oxygen within before being extinguished. Not as good as flushing with carbon dioxide but worth a shot in a punch provided you are not sorting in a massive barrel?

I have heard live aboard yachtoes swear by bayleaves too to slow the wevills down but I haven't tried it myself.
