I must admit Hill that was a top drop. The only problem is all my stuff now tastes like crap in comparison.

Best thing to use for mashing is an esky....dead simple. As long as you have a seperate vessel to provide hot water you are set. My picnic esky doubles as my mash tun. All I do is put in a false bottom.

Braumister is a bit OT.

Thanks mate looked into eskys but I like over the top and I like building I wanna do a three tank herms because I know id out grow a esky and for the cost of an esky id rather weld kegs and make something kickarse :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Also love homebrew beer need to be able to boil at the end of mashing

You would be a fool to boil your mash in the same tun.

Huh? I think ya need to reread what I said I never implied that a 3 tier herms has 3 seperate vessels a boiler, hlt and mash tun dont know where you got boiliing in the mash tun but sams right brew in a bag works like that though

I've gone down the BIAB method (Brew in a Bag) for mashing, instead 3 vessel setup. Mainly for space and laziness requirements. Its simple (simple in my opinion, people can get a little excited about this topic) to clean, simple to build, simple to run, doesnt take up much space and i get good efficiency. I cant easily do stepped mashes and mashouts but gives me beer i'm happy with. I'm waiting on my still from Mac, getting pretty excited

I have one 92litre Stainless Steel stock pot with a hole drilled
A ball value tap
Two over the side 2400w immersion elements
One big freaking bag.

In short:
1. Crack grain
2. heat water to strike temp for mash
3. Put bag in water, put grain in bag, stir
4. cover with towels and camping mat to mash away
5. pull our bag and grain
6. drop in elements and boil.

Not sure how much mashing i will do for whiskey's, using liquid malt or a mix of the two but i think time will tell if i can taste the difference or how much of a difference it makes.
