Ex-food grade plastic drums

Postby fattypatty » Fri Jun 14, 2013 7:00 pm

I've been looking at these drums for fermenters, It says they are "Ex-Food Grade" (dont know what that really means).
Any thoughts on their suitability?

If you look at the advertisement it tells what they were used for...

Ex-food grade plastic drums

Postby Stevem109r » Fri Jun 14, 2013 7:18 pm

Food grade has a life span and a number of use. It means that the use by date on commercial use to store and ship food stuff has expired. If this is not in place some persons would never replace them.

It doesn't mean that it is no longer safe, for a domestic short term type storage use.

They are also very good for suburban rain water tanks, one per down spout, much cheaper than the hardware stores.

That pickle smell is fucking intense .I've bought quite a few of these over the years and it takes ages (read several years ) before the smell goes away.
If you intend using these as fermentors to produce a whiskey with subtle nuances of grain .For get it cause you will get sledge hammer nuance of pickle :laughing-rolling:

They make excellent rain water tanks and compost bins in the garden though :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That would have been better to hear before I bought 1 :angry-banghead: . It was only $30 so not the worst money i have spent. It did have a pretty funky smell to begin with. I have left it full of bleach to attack and It wasnt expected to get a use for a few weeks at minimum, worst case may have to experiment with some strong acid to try and strip it back and than leave it at the bottom of the pool to "rinse" for a while.

I'll let you know how i go, Pickle whisky doesn't sound very tempting

ahh these look like my sort of 'bread and butter' but they're in SA :(, might be in a bit of a 'pickle'.
Don't be a 'dill' and cut 'corner'chons, clean those barrels like your 'Polish Pickle' depends on it.

Go to your nearest marine store,Bias,BLA etc and get some gear called "Drifter",mix according to directions,4-1 I think spray inside, leave 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft: too fucking easy.If it gets rid of rotten bait smells from an esky,it'll get rid of pickle smells :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:
And no,I didn't leave a box of squid,2kgs of pillies and 5 slimey mackerel in the esky on Friday after fishing

Hi all,

I was out at my mates dairy today and walked past a heap of 200 ltr plastic drums he had there. I asked him about them and he said thats the stuff he uses to wash the cows teets and the milking plant. He said i could take a couple if i wanted but I'm unsure if they would be suitable? 1 of them has had "idyne" in it and the other has had "protosolv" in it. They both have corrosive #8 on them and say do not swallow, not sure that's a good thing  but if it's used around milk and through their plant maybe they might be ok.

Does anyone out there know anything about this stuff and if these drums would be suitable for fermenting in.

I used to sell those many years ago.
They clean and sanitise the dairy before milk goes through it.
I'd have no problem using them after a good clean and rinse with boiling water.
Dairy companies are very careful about what they allow farmers to use in dairies.
