If you get it down to 1.000 it should be closer to 9.6%
I heard the majors aim for around 8% in there wash.
Which yeast did you use?

With the pump for this type of setup what material for the pump is ok and what sort of flow is needed. I have a DAB brand pump it is a hot water pump used for circulating hot water for solar hot water and is cast iron it says it has 3 speeds with a max flow of 50 LPM. Would this be suitable. Also is there somewhere on here that describes the method of running this type of setup.

Yeah I think cast iron will end up just rusting out, you can buy a pretty cheap version of a march pump on ebay for about $70 IIRC

It says it has an Electrophoresis coating for maximum corrosion resistance not sure what that is. What about flow rate.

Probably works on the same principal as the double helix reflux capacitator transfuctioner  :laughing-rolling:

Just a couple more questions.

1. Do you pump hot water over the grain once its drained to rinse the last out of it.

2. How do you get all of the spent grain out of the esky once you are done.

3. Is brass and plastic ok for use in a tunn or is it just stainless and copper.

1, you can do that, it lowers your ABV a little.... I didnt bother.

2, shovel and bucket, then tip and rinse.

3, I'm comfortable using those materials in a zero alcohol environment, others may have a different view.

Just be careful with some types of pvc pipes as some are not heat rated!!

Pretty sure all PVC pipe is heat rated for hot water, I don't think plumbers would bury pipe under the ground that is going to melt :wtf:

But at certain temperatures it can leach of nasties. I had to be aware of this when I made my mash tun :D

I gotta admit PVC is not something I would have considered using, the soft hoses from the HERMS is heavy duty pure silicone :handgestures-thumbupleft:

This is an awesome build! I'm going to have a crack at this design or a version of.

Two questions:

1 - Did you get the 815 or 809 March Pump or other?

2 - If you did this again, would you change anything?

Pretty sure it's the 809 mate, I'll confirm later.

I probably wouldnt change much except having the unit as a single complete unit on a trolley, ATM it's a bit of a PITA to set up and dismantle each time but not a very big job to change that.

Cheers.

Have you tried fermenting in the mash tun maybe with a chiller unit like your heating unit I'm having problems with fermentation in my mash tun because of excess heat and in your heating unit does your wash run through the unit and be in contact with the element
