so i am going to have another go at all graining whiskey...

i got my new mill and was going to go 50 / 50 on some barley / malt
and i also have a 70L mash tun esky and manifold
so looking at double batches of 60L around 6-8%

anyone had a look at barley and this steam flaked stuff ?
i was thinking the steam flaked might be easy to work with (no milling / cooking)

http://berniesproduce.com/index.php?mai ... ucts_id=33

but i dont really want something that will turn to mush and block the mash

also looking at
http://berniesproduce.com/index.php?mai ... ucts_id=31
http://berniesproduce.com/index.php?mai ... ucts_id=30
http://berniesproduce.com/index.php?mai ... ucts_id=29

any thoughts on the stuff ?
thanks

well looks like i wasted $13 on 20kg of barley then didn't i

it is also a lot harder to crack than normal malt, would need a powerful motor to mill heaps of it. :(

It's a good flavour addition to ujsm style scotch washes, or you can use enzymes to convert it.

i cracked some and did a micro mash on the stove at 66" C

half and half beer malt / barley (about 500g total) but i did not weigh it or measure anything

and hit 1030 ish .... it was pretty thin with lots of water

will crack some more and do a proper mash using some calcs to estimate a sg

got to get some iodine to test to see whats happening with the starches as well

thanks all

i did a rough re-weigh of the malt and barley of roughly what i had in the small tubs i threw in the pot
made a guess at a outcome of 4L

put the numbers into brewmate and with a 70% efficiency it give me a SG of 1030

that kind of tells me a got a reasonable conversion of the un-malted barley
based on beer malt only i would have only got 1.014

cracking it was a pain but after the weekend i will give it another go

while running my pot today i did a bit more on my grian mill and it's now "working"

i cracked a bit of un-malted barley and some malted grain for a mini mash

will mash it for a few hours and then test if with iodine etc to see how conversion goes

chuck up some pics later

if it's all good then a 25L all grain mash is on later this week for a "single malt whiskey " :)

forgot the pics but based on the iodine tests i got full (or near full) conversion

now to get serious and grind up 10kg (5 of each) and make a higher SG mash for punkins yeast :)

the real question is to boil it or not after the mash to "sterilize" the wort
copper wort chiller might be the next project....

It's a good idea. i used to get a fair few infections with my all grain.
