Cheap malts and grains in Perth?

Postby DIYdistiller » Fri Mar 07, 2014 8:15 am

Hi all. I'm new to this site and WA as well, and was hoping someone could tell me where the best place is to get malts (especially peated malt for a scotch) by the sack in Perth?

When I google it, i find BulkBrewingSupplies (http://www.bulkbrewingsupplies.com.au) and they seem pretty cheap and even have a special on peated malt too ($70 a bag). But where are they and has anyone ever dealt with them? There is little contact detail online.

Also I found TWOC (http://www.homebru.com.au), who seems to have a bigger range but more expensive. I might head there today, as after speaking with a person there (Roy?), he seems to really know his stuff.

There are also some other places around, but they sell by the Kilo (around $4-$6) which is too much for my budget.

Have I missed anyone, or do people use other suppliers? I don't want to buy all these ingredients and then find I got ripped! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Regards

Thanks beerfridge. I sent him a mail this morning and he was quick to respond an even was happy to leave the peated malt out the front of his house if I needed to pick it up when he isn't home, so I'm pretty happy with that.

Will go to TWOC tomorrow thou, as they have lots of equipment there it seems.

Are you referring to TWOC's website. Yeah, pretty old school. But he stocks more than anyone else I've found! Phil.

... and charges like a crazy bull too ;-)

Last time I went in there I got treated like shit for asking a question, so I dumped about $450 worth of gear on his counter, walked out and have never been back.

yeah mac. i had pretty appalling "service" there as well- the 150kg women served me though not the bloke. so when i need this and that i head to the HBS in Cockburn- don't think they have much in terms of grains though (i haven't checked as stock-feed is across the road). the guy also works in the HBS joondalup on weekends and his wife runs the store on weekends in Cockburn.

Ok. Visited TWOC, and Bulk brew supplies this week, but also super expensive for grains ($6.95/kg for the ones I was looking at, which is way out of my budget). TWOC has lots of stuff and I'm sure he's knowledgeable (when he wants to be), but I wasn't overly impressed with the service. BUlk brewing is by far the cheapest but doesn't know anything about Distilling, only brewing beer.

Can't comment on malts but grains...

Brigadoon produce;

Cracked maize 25kg: $19
barley 25kg: $19
wheat 25kg: $19
oats 30kg: $20

Always good stuff and great service every time. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Dunno if Bulk Brewing Supplies is a member on here, but they just posted this up on AHB

Fellow brewers,

Bulk Brewing Supplies will no longer be stocking peated malts, so we will be discounting the remaining few bags we have left to make room for other stock.

All Bairds Medium Peated Malt (25kg) bags will be sold at $55 (pick up only). Hurry, as there are only a few bags left, so please send a PM or email me asap.

Happy brewing!

Andrew

Damn it. I guess it didn't work out for him. I might buy a bag as I refuse to pay $6.95 per kilo at other home brew stores. Does anyone have his mobile number? It's not on the website.

I've pinged him an email but I don't thing I'll get a response at 8.30pm!

You can try andrew from BBS. I just emailed him and he replied. He won't be selling peated malt anymore, but if you want to order any other malt or grain he can order it provided you're willing to wait until he takes delivery. He recons he gets deliveries every fortnight, so maybe try him.

The other person is TWOC. They aren't cheap, but they have a massive range. Roy is also very helpful, I've found anyway.

Cheers for that mate.

Would pop corn work? Plenty of places sell that by the KG.
