malted wheat and barley

Postby marbaker » Sat May 10, 2014 10:52 pm

Hi folks
just another quick question can you make vodka just by using malted barley or malted wheat instead of sugar, iv read the forum regarding a whiskey mash. as I have got a friend who owns a micro brewery and he can get me as much malt as I want very cheap, all I want to produce is neat alcohol so I can add flavour as I only have a T500 still. thanks mark

Sure you can, probably be pretty good too. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

A lot of commercial vodka Is made that way. It just needs the extra step of mashing to turn the starch into sugar.
Your a lucky man, have at it.

It work great and be easy. Its a shame to strip all that goodness out. I like wheat better than barley.

Build a pot still head for your boiler and put those grains to good use making whiskey/whisky.

Making AG vodka seems like a huge waste of time and effort to me...

thanks for the reply zak my friend I wouldn't have a clue on making a pot still head that's why I just do the simple things all I want is how to make a mash out of the malted wheat and barley of which I get for free, so I can make neat alcohol. thanks mark

I'm assuming you've already got all of the gear you need to make an all grain mash?

Great link kimbo, probably would have taken me forever to find that. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
Marbaker that should sort you out pretty well. I will add my voice to the chorus of get a pot or better yet a bubbler still for sure. But in the mean time learning good mashing techniques will be of great benefit in whatever direction you take this hobby.
Happy mashing :greetings-waveyellow:

Marbarker are you in perth? I do a day on brewing at a HBS every 2 months, the next 1 is this Saturday coming if you wanted to come see a mash done. As for vodka Id look at mashing 60% malted wheat 40% pilsner malt 90min mash 62deg I use 22kg of grain in an 80L mash tun and just use the first runnings to give me 40l at about 1080. Once you get the mash done and into a fermenter cooled I'd use something like a S23 German larger yeast at 12deg or a us05 at about 16deg.
I'm not sure it's really worth it with your still but knock your socks off mate.

Be careful how much is diverted from the micro brewery as they may think that beer is being produced and not accounted for .

I dont think you'd be able to run enough for personal use through a T500 to raise any suspicion 8-}

I'd say they have allowance for loss, how much grain each week would you need to do a mash for a 25L boiler 8-}

must be nearly time for the tin foil hats and cargo netting again :laughing-rolling:
