Na , use a false bottom ,,, the grain will stay in the bottom of the esky and the corn/grain will filter and sparge the wort .... think of what happens in my mash tun , the grain stays in the bag but the wort still flows through the pump. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Ive been thinking, this is the counter flow chiller you could use

Sit it between you pump and you HERMS kettle Like this

So during "mashing" operation the pump is ON , Counterflow is OFF and the HERMS kettle is ON.

Once mashing is finished, Pump is still ON, Counterflow is ON and HERMS is OFF.

I wouldnt worry about the grain with your pipes you can also add a flase bottom, heres one for a Idea

I also think a PID controller for the HERMS kettle with a K-Type thermocouple on the sparge side of the HERMS,,,, it means it will ramp temp slower (less chance to scorch grain) but will be much more accurate

Hope this Helps out with some ideas :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'd be going with a PT100 probe over a K Type Thermocouple, they're much more accurate with the actual fluid temp over a K Type, which you really want with stepped mashes
See this blog post on AHB for a good argument for the PT100

Linny that is the exact counterflow I had in mind , with slightly different plumbing. But we're definitely on the same page. :handgestures-thumbupleft: And Spork I will check that out I thank you both for your input. ;-)

I'm a little concerned that your BBQ might not have enough burners. :teasing-tease:

:scared-eek: :scared-eek: :scared-eek: that really is a big bbq. You could cook the whole cow in that :laughing-rolling:

Anyway nice coil :handgestures-thumbupleft: i recon that would have been fun to make aswell. How long did it take ya and does it work well?

I really am considering building one of these but not sure how they would go with corn at that real porragey stage, would you get enough wort to circulate? Or are these more just for a barley/wheat malt type thing?

Good job D, i look forward to seeing it all together.

Thanks for the kind words fellas, Woody I'm trying to work out away around the corn issue as being able to do corn mashes is important to me seems in my small scale test a water to corn ratio needs to be at least 6 to 1 but I have a few ideas :-B
