HBS Maize vs Stock feed Maize question

Postby vqstatesman » Tue Feb 03, 2015 10:57 am

Hi All,

Planning on trying an AG mash at some stage in the future and have a question regarding Maize...

I'm aware of the difference between between HBS and stock feed grains, 6 vs 2 row, starch levels, etc. But what about the difference between HBS Maize and Stock feed Maize? Is there much difference?

I've not ever seen grading's on maize purchases other than whole bags.

Being slightly sus on HBS supplies there may a chance it's the same stock grade re bagged.

Flaked maize like food grade is a different story.

Yet to find an organic or graded maize supplier in SA...if anyone has found one?

I've tried bairds flaked maize and normal feed store corn. I find that whilst the flaked maize is easier to work with it doesnt taste as good as the feed store corn. I think its because the feedstore stuff has the complete grain intact

If money isnt an issue you could try both. BUt i believe that the feedstore corn is better. However if the prices were reversed i'd use the hbs flaked maize, the flavour isnt that different. I feel hbs corn is a little cleaner. Edited to add: Cleaner in a bad way, its got less flavour

I peeked around the back of an HBS near me and they are definitely repackaging from 25kg bags from fodder shop.

Up here from a HBS it's about $5.90 kg for flaked maize, VS Stock feed 85c per kg for cracked corn. You may need to gelatinise the cracked corn first, but to me it's worth it for the $ difference.

I wouldn't bother naming and shaming mate, id have a guess and say that most HBS's do exactly the sane!

What about Corn Extruded 20kg

Highly digestible, safer to feed & more cost effective than feeding whole or cracked corn.? The Steam Extrusion process increases corn digestibility in the small intestine - from around 29% for whole/cracked corn to over 90% for Steam Extruded Corn, reducing the risk factors for laminitis, diarrhoea and colic. Replace 1 kilo of whole or cracked corn with 670 grams of Mitavite Extruded Corn.
