Would you buy a 50L Grainfather?

Postby vqstatesman » Tue Oct 27, 2015 8:19 am

Hi All,

I have been very keen into getting into AG for quite some time... However many of the methods eg BIAB, false bottom eskies and elaborate setups really put me off.

I really like the Braumeister, but $3.5K for a 50L is just ridiculous. And it doesn't even come with everything you need, chillers etc are still extra.

And then along came the Grainfather. I have followed many reviews which seem the give this device a really good write up. But it's just to small for my liking. I really want a 50L version. So I decided to contact Grainfather and let them know. They noted my request and stated if they had enough interest they would potentially consider making one.

I hope I'm not breaking forum rules here but just thought I would start an expression of interest thread for them. If we get enough interest on here maybe they might listen. So who else is interested in a 50L? Note your interest below.

Buy a Grainfather and a Grainbrother. You can brew 2 batches at the sametime. Still cheaper then a 20L Braumeister

Just a bit of perspective regarding the price of the Braumeister...we have a 50 litre Braumeister and have put over 500 kegs through it in 7 years.... it has cost us 2 silicone seals in all that time...I can think of few other pieces of equipment we have that have given such consistent service....I know they are expensive, and not for everyone...but they are very, very, good.

Indeed if I were going legit I can see the benefit and as I've ordered a bottle of the docs old reliable I'm sure I'm going to see the quality these things can produce...it's on my list, but there are many other things I need first and I'm not convinced that a clever bloke couldn't fabricate something up near as good for 1/3 the cost....but as I'm not that clever...I could be wrong :-D

Don't think that will cut the mustard. I don't think the grainbrother has a malt pipe/basket. Isn't it essentially another boiler and pump?

To be honest if I were starting now ...I would probably just use an esky and do a passive mash... the braumeister is better for complex beer runs, than for 3 rest whiskey runs.

Plenty big for 50-60L batches
I'm going one of these for my new rig, I figure with batch sparging I should push out even more than the esky's volume

People seem to overthink their mashing setups quite a lot, your conversion is usually complete in the first 30 minutes, so complicated RIMS or HERMS setups aren't needed in all scenarios unless you're step mashing for certain flavour profiles and whatnot
A nice big HLT, a big esky, a big kettle and a GOOD thermometer will make a great wash

I am currently looking at a 800 litre ice box on Gumtree.... I think that it would make a great mash tun... with a false floor for drainage... http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/mornings ... 1090898814
