Hi Guys,

I ordered 25kg of cracked golden promise and a few kg of bairds peated malt as I was planning on doing a few mac whiskeys, then I thought why not have a crack at AG I have a couple of 100l poly eskys laying around.

So my question is, how do I work out my grain to wate ratio for a 45 - 50l wash. And can I just get the water to strike temp mix the grain in close it up and hope for the best?
I have looked at the iodine testing procedure for conversion and read brendans guide over and over, but does the same relate to a single malt? its basically the grain/water ratio im struggling with.

I do intend on building a mashtun but would like to have a crack in the next few days. Its probably been answered in a thread somewhere I just cant find it.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

The iodine test will still work I would of thought.

Iodine test applies to al ag recipe the iodine reacts with the starch no reaction means the starch is now sugar..

I dont know how to adjust grain bill for different size washs so cant help there. Principal of ag appliies to all ag recipes release starch from grain then use enzymes in malts to convert it then ferment :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just read 1.3 litres water to 500grams grain. There is a single malt recipe that I want to try on a hbs website called Brewers choice it has a simple method. Hope I can put that name up :think:

You'll need 2-3 litres of strike water for each kilo of grain. You will lose about 1litre of water per kilo of grain used. Use a brewing program like brewmate, which is free or beersmith to work out the quantity of grain you need for your desired og.
For 40-45 litres of wash I use about 19kg of grain with about 50l of strike water at about 72 degrees and 10-15 l of sparge water to rinse the sugars off the grain after a 90 Min mash. Invest in a thermometer and try to keep it at around 62-65 degrees for the mash. I find adding some enzymes during the mash will greatly increase the amount of conversion you get.

Thanks or the help guy's i'll pop into the brew shop and get some enzyme tomorrow and give it a shot on Saturday while I run a mac rum spirit run.

I'd go a little bit higher at 4 litres per kilo but all depends on what your conversion is like, if you sparge and what overall % fermented wash your aiming for,
I aim for somewhere between 5-7%, some may say that is too low but each to their own.
Try it with and without enzymes, you may not even need them.
Oh and don't fill that boiler too much and be ready for a puke :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've been trialing a sugar head scotch recipe using 2row barley and peated malt, seeing as you'll have a couple of kg's of grain leftover you could give it a go after your AG run?

How did you go with your all grain mate?
