Gin Basket/ Flavoured vodka

Postby Fed » Mon Mar 02, 2015 6:18 am

Hi all,

Just bought one of Macs you beaut 2 inch pot stills, cheers mac, rum is soooooo much better. The cheese and kisses has just discovered clear flavoured vodka. So, before I invest in a gin basket I'm hoping to clear up doubt in my methodology. As a trail, only, I had planned on building a sock type thing out of copper mesh, filling it up with the desired fruit and placing it in the column prior just above the boiler. The column is 600mm high so had planned to pack about 500mm if fruit, with space for the vapour to go through of course. If this works, and more to the point, the boss likes it, will build a more permanent one. Am I on the right track?

Cheers,

Fed

Botanicals in the upward vapour flow with the heavier oils returning to the boiler will work well, however personally I would be worried about blocking or flooding the 2 " section, as some fruit will compact severely when heated. This may be managed with careful power control. many people also place botanicals in the boiler.

NFI myself as I use a carter type head

Thanks Meat, didn't think of the fruit collapsing. Glad I asked could have been real dangerous. :angry-banghead: Will have to try and dangle above the neutral and before the column, perhaps make a simple bag and clamp it on to the under screw of the column.

G'day Hillzabilly,

What a great idea. I don't have ridges but I can make a copper stand to sit in the boiler and have the colanda rest on that.

I tried vanilla pods wrapped in copper mesh this morning, 4 litres of neutral at 40% watered down to 20% with ten beans in the column. Haven't tasted it yet but the smell was amazing when running and the results smell pretty damn good as well.

From what I understand, and please correct me if I am wrong, brass is OK if it's treated. Again, could be wrong, but boiling it in a vinegar/water bath stops it being dangerous to ethanol. My grandad used brass connectors and this is what he used to tell me. Always thought it was a myth, but have read a few articles which say the same. My original pot and my botha all have the same nut and nothing seems to go wrong.

:text-+1: there are ways to mitigate the "risk" of brass that has been covered more times than I care to remember.

Use what you are comfortable with and what you are comfortable to serve to your friends and family :-B
