Cloudy after watering down - solutions?

Postby northerner » Mon Oct 26, 2020 10:21 am

So my last run has left me scratching my head, here's the timeline:

1. TPW x 3
2. All stripped and combined
3. Reflux run for neutral, made cuts as best I could
4. Odins gin recipe, although the mandarins I used were pretty big - so lots of peel
5. Steeped for 2 weeks
6. All in boiler for pot run
7. All good (although the mandarin really came through more than expected)
8. Watered down and now cloudy

From searching, it looks like it could be too much oil from the mandarins and once ABV drops below 47-50% it clouds up?

Is the easiest solution to bump up the ABV with some more neutral or perhaps re-run it? Would re-running it sort the issue do you think, given the oils are still there?

It’s probably oil from the mandarin skin that’s in suspension

Could it be from tails? How harsh did you cut?

Yep, that's the mandarin oil coming through causing the louching. If you macerated for 2 weeks you probably should've taken the mandarin skins out before distilling "on the herbs".

No biggie though, just add some ~95% neutral until it clears. If you leave it for 3-5 weeks the mandarin will mellow out a bit. If it's still too citrusy after that I'd probably re-run it to make an essence, which you can blend with future recipes. Re-running it in a pot still won't "dilute" the oils.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes seems to be the mandarin rather than too much tails, which I’ve read about also.

Will do as you mention Tesla and up the ABV with some neutral.

Thanks!

Just a quick update - bumped up to 48% and crystal clear.

Thanks for comments.

Its the citrus oils coming out of solution and 'louching'.

Very few Citrus oils will stay in an ethanol solution of less than 44%. Same applies to a lot of gin botanicals. Hence why Gin is tradditionally made at 45% or above.

Glycerine will lower the solution point to a degree.

One thing I've learnt over time is that too much heads (for want of a better word) can cause "louching" but you can easily think it's the tails causing it.
