Stainless polishing cutting compounds.

Postby bluc » Sun Nov 27, 2016 9:56 am

I have some stainless polishing to do over next few months, and I am wondering if the stainless steel cuting polishing compounds you get from bunnings are food safe and if they will leave a taste.
I was given a 200l stainless drum i want to turn into a mash tun/fermenter and would like to polish it up. Inside and out..

Probably not food safe.
But after a few clean outs with some heads and a few rinses with water there wont be any of it left to worrk about.

Check on the label for directions, I'd assume most people would use this type of product to polish their food preparation items such as, bench tops, sinks, knives, BBQ etc.
Maybe flick an email to the manufacturer or look up the SDS.

bluc, i read somewhere that ss will actually (kind of) corrode if certain chemicals are stored or placed on its surface...acids or bases. I suppose what i am saying is that if you go to all the trouble of polishing the inside, and it tarnishes/corrodes slightly, well...its a lot of work down the tubes. I think "stainless properties" or similar on Dr. Goog may help.

Acids and bases are ok depending on grade of stainless and temperature.
What you want to avoid is chlorine based cleaners and bleaches.

Just give it a good scrub with a nylon scourer and be done with it.

After polishing kegs what can be done to preserve finish? Clear coat car wax?

When I polished my keg I use for my bubbler, I did a final polish with "California Purple" metal polish. Didn't clear coat it and it's nearly 2 years and it just needs a quick hand biff with a microfiber cloth once in a blue moon.

You could clear coat it but not anywhere near where you are going to place wash or in drains etc. Make sure it's a clear that can tolerate heat. My bubbler, Bender is clear coated and still hasn't tarnished.
