SS keg as fermenter

Postby P1ratepat » Wed May 10, 2017 8:25 am

Hey there, I have acquired a couple of 50l kegs, was planning on turning them into a 2v all grain beer setup, however that is a little bit away yet, and 30l fermenters leave a lot to be desired, I was thinking of using these kegs for the time being as fermentation vessels, my plan is to take the top of both and clean up around the edges, clean them up and was hoping they would be ready to go. However (I may be over thinking it) will the stainless get too cold in the cooler months and kill of the yeast? If so should I insulate the keg? Or get an aquarium heater or two? This will mean I have 160l of space available, and can make up 140l of wash :D

You can pick up 60L HDPE wheelie bins from cheap as chips for $15, heaps easier than an SS KEG.

Gummie often has 60 120 150 and 209L hdpe drums with removable lids that are usually around $25... That's what I use.

PP, even tho you have been given other options, i would go with what i already have, for what its worth, as we tend to over accumulate, well i do anyway...A 100W aquarium heater (Fleabay/China.. super cheap and worth the wait) is what i use in my 85lit esky. It keeps the temp easily stable and adjustable, you will obviously need one for each fermenter.

Thanks everyone, as far as im concerned I think I will just go with what I have, I already have accumulated a lot in a short space and its creeping into every space in the house. I cant weld/dont weld so will stick to using seperate with an aquarium heater. Thanks :handgestures-thumbupleft:

What is the going price for a keg would think they are a perfect size and long lasting and have many uses with the spear removed would not be that hard to clean.

Kegs are hard to fill, seal, empty, clean, lift and move. They possess none of the qualities that you want in a fermenter.

Would think any problems with kegs could be worked out with a bit of planning and being stainless could use heat to disinfect and clean

Yep you sure can, no one is going to stop you from working harder...
You are not the first to have this idea nor the last but why work harder when you can work smarter?

The proper plastics are great for fermenters, remember that you are not playing footy with them, their primary job is to hold liquid while it ferments.
Isn't it fantastic that they wont give you a hernia when you lift the empty ones up onto the top shelf of the shed out of the way?
