is stainless scrubber in copper still sufficient?

Postby seehuusen » Wed May 24, 2017 7:26 pm

Hey guys,

I was wondering if someone could let me know what the general consensus is, as the title suggests, do I need a copper scrubber in my copper still? Or can I get away with stainless?

The still I'm building is all copper, a 2" pot still, to sit on a 50L keg.

Thanks in advance,
Martin

If you are building a copper pot still you don't need any scrubbers mate.
My pot still had no scrubbers in it and its all copper. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

:text-+1: the boiler is irrelevant, u have more than enough copper to not need any scrubbers :handgestures-thumbupleft:

See... scrubbers (packing) are used in reflux/refractionating stills to assist in restricting the vapour path which improves the purity and strips off flavours...creating a neutral spirit. Your Pot still is a straight out tube without restriction to assist in flavour retention. The copper is to remove sulphides produced in some circumstances, but some copper in the upper part of your vapour path (which you have) is all you need.

Appreciate the feedback, I didn't realize that the scrubber would affect this way, but that does make sense now you mention it kenster, thanks! :handgestures-thumbupleft:
