Water cooling , using a volttage controller

Hi all

I am finally going to setup my cooling system using a couple of 280 liter olive barrels and a 350 watt Ozito submersible pump, i was wondering if a voltage controller could be used on these pumps to control the out put e.g

When stripping i would run flat out but when i am using the T500 for reflux i would need to control the water flow

My (very limited) understanding is that an AC powered pump cannot be simply controlled by a voltage regulator (output power also depends on frequency).
A needle or gate valve is really the simplest solution.

Hey Doublej, i thought back pressure on the pump might have been an issue

Thanks for that, do you thin the back pressure on the pump will be an issue?

Nope just back sure you only ever limit the pump output dont limit the flow to the pump.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

:text-+1: these pumps are designed for household applications where you might have the tap fully on, half closed or a trickle. It'll supply only what is demanded.

I purchased a needle valve from Brewers Delight and it has proved to be the answer to controlling temperature in my T500.

Hi davesims

The voltage controllers are being used to control a resistive load i.e. a heater element where as the submersible pump motor would be an inductive load. The pump motor will try to run at its rated output in watts so if you decrease the voltage then the amps will increase to compensate and most probably burn out the pump motor. :doh:

T piece, one side pump, other device.

Third outlet to ball valve and return to tank.

This will give you full control without any pressure build up issues.
