Best way to clean fermenter

Hi all, i have a 60 lite plastic fermenter that i have not used on 4 or 5 months, the last time i used it I washed with sodium percarbonate, then spayed the crap out of it with start and closed the lid.

I opened it up today and its clean inside but still hes residue smell from last wash, what is the best way to treat this, is it ok as is? wash again with sodium percarbonate?

Once a year I get my beer fermenters and fill them with water then add a couple of cups of unscented bleach and let sit for a couple of days then drain out from the tap and give it a real good rinse.

I know some beer guys will shudder at that but I have never had a problem and they come up clean and fresh as a daisy :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I use Sodium Metabisulphate solution, it gets rid of most odours, sanitises and clears out your sinuses at the same time.

+1 on napisan get the uncented one. I now use 100% sodium percarbonate and let it soak also called oxy bleach. Dont worry to much about a bit of smell as long as it doesnt smell off you will be a good :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thank you all, i will continue with the Sodium Percarbornate , i might go and grab a 20 kg bulk bucket as i am almost ou, $66 for 20 kg cant go wrong

Yes its a tough one, Napisan is only 25% sodium percarbornate , i have looked around for 100% but cannot find any in bulk

I just hose my 80 litres olive drums out and fill them up again with tpw in 4 years never had a problem

Just be wary of this stuff if you or anybody in the vicinity of where you are using it has asthma. I used it when I was sterilizing my beer gear when I started brewing beer and had a massive asthma attack, the Dr at the emergency room said heaps of home brewers have breathing problems relating to the vapours from this stuff. If I steralise anything now I use starsan.

I just hose it out and whack the next batch down specially if it's the same stuff...
I used to do the whole Oxi-type powder thing, but don't bother anymore, because I'm a lazy bastard.
I still haven't had a ferment go bad
...yet.

You guys don't sanitise :scared-eek: neither do I :laughing-rolling: I stopped about 15 years ago, if they get really manky, bit of napisan goes a long way :handgestures-thumbupleft:

At the start of the fermenting season I use unscented bleach and let soak over night followed by a good clean out with fresh water. Following this I use potassium metabisulfite with a teaspoon of tartaric acid which will release the sulphur.
This will keep the fermenters fresh until you are ready to use them.
For pumps I use food grade proxitane.

As Plumby said be careful around sulphur... It can be a killer.
