Yep your onto it, epdm and silicon are the go you can use plumbers thread tape aswell, depending on what your sealing. Plenty of blokes have used the silicon baking mats from kmart and the like aswell. http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic ... 239#p64116

Thanks for the link
Is one better than the other or do blokes have a preference?

It would depend on what your sealing. Both materials are safe to use so whatever is easier to get or takes your fancy I guess.

How would a dough seal go in water once compressed? I've seen it used as a flange plate seal on top of a boiler. Inside dough is like slimy eel from the steam and the bits that were compressed are an edible snack when cleaning the seal after the flange is removed. Notwithstanding that, would it work if boiling water was on both sides.

Flour paste should not be used execpt in a dier circumstances as a last resort. Please don't use it as a every day sealent, I just dont think it would be reliable enough. You can use a cardboard gasket with thread tape wrapped around it heaps of times if you can't find anything else.

An old wog mate (he actually tells people he is a "Vog" :)) ) suggested it to me - he said his dad in the "old country" used it for 40 years and he himself has been doing so for 40 years. It seals a bolted down cap (external). Only thing wrong is the bolts need tightening as everything gets hot and the dough shrinks - so yep, could be unreliable if not monitored.

For the sake of a $3 silicon baking tray/mat it’s not worth the risk.
