Before first T500 run

Postby Pottsy1985 » Sun Aug 06, 2017 11:50 pm

Hi,

just wondering if a vinegar or sacrificial run is needed for first run on a t500? or is it good to go out of box

Regards

Ok Thank you. So the vinegar run is a 50/50 vinegar water solution? and just run it like its a normal wash or hotter? i've read not to run the t500 too hot because of the plastic tubing at top of the column. Thanks for your help, this will be my first ever run!

Yep my black maximus (bought from a HBS) was advertised as good to run first go and I tried that first go. Well the product had such a bad smell and a weird taste.
Turned out the copper was dirty as and it needed a soak in vinegar, then a steam (water/vinegar) run for at least 30 mins, then tip the stuff from the first run back in the boiler and top up with water to 25ltrs and rerun that thru (with cooling on!) for a sacrificial run for cleaning. It was good to go after that and I've put at least 4 batches of Tomato Paste Wash thru since and they all taste great.

Yes you can do a 50/50 vinegar/water run. Not sure about the plastic tubing though, my one is all metal and I did'nt need any cooling on so the steam would pass thru the whole unit.

Thanks bluc. I might just keep it at around 60C with the vinegar to be safe. I have 2 x 25L TPW that finished fermenting yesterday. So it's been clearing about 24hrs. If the first run is a sac run, does that mean I can just do it now without waiting for it to fully clear? Would like to free up that fermenter to get another lot fermenting!

In relation to a vinegar/water consummation run on a reflux , would be the case that if using new ceramic rachig rings or SS scrubbers, should they also be in the column at the same time?

HI. How did your vinegar run go in the end? I'm doing one later this week also on a T500.
