50l keg 2" pot stripping ?

Postby bluc » Mon Aug 07, 2017 8:26 pm

Wondering if anyone can give me an estimate of time it takes to strip say 40l standard mcrum with 3600w power and a 2" pot still?. (Shotgun condenser)
Have boiled some water but waiting for wash to finish. Hopefully this weekend coming..

Cool look forward to it 2hrs sounds promising. I will be super happy if i can strip a keg quicker than it took for a 25l turbo boiler  took me 2.5-3 hrs on my little boiler..

Takes me about 2 hrs but that's on a 4 ring gas burner, don't know how that compares to 3600w electric

Heat up time is your biggest killer, insulation is a good help.

For a 40L wash takes me 3hrs with 4800w, running a bubbler in pot mode, once its up to temp I shut down one element and run the other flat out, no insulation on my boiler yet though. With a shorter column you should get a better time. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

After coming up to temp, 3 hours to strip 45ish litres using a 2400w element. Leaves me 10ish litres of strip

All finished at 9:40am. So 2 hours and 4 minutes for 10ish liters at 55%.

Hi Ben, I have to ask, it it's at 28C do you heat up your wash overnight?

I hadn't thought about it before but putting a timer on a few hours ahead of time to bring it up to 30-ish via a heat pad or aquarium heater might be a safe (and relatively cheap) way to get a head start.

Cheers.

Some parts in the shed for something more "traditional", 2" MacBoka atop a 50L SS keg fitted with 2 x 2400W weldless elements (with guards).

Hey Bunda. 28 degrees is what the heat belt was able to maintain during fermentation with the asssistance of some old sheets and one of those foam "sleeping" mats wrapped around it. I left it on after it finished fermenting to keep the yeast toasty ready for the next gen.

Hey Bluc, I have a 2400 watt element in my keg, it takes just under 11/2 hours to start producing spirit after that it takes no more than 2 hours to punch out 10-12 litres of around 50-55% abv spirit.

Cheers plumby. Just stripped 40l 3600w. Took me 2h 50mins (had a small puke and cut power by half for half hour would have added bit of time) switch on to off. Happy with that considering 25l used to take me 2.5h with t500 boiler. Will get it insulated asap and should knock some more time off.. :D
