Couple bubbler questions..

Postby bluc » Fri Aug 11, 2017 8:16 pm

So starting my bubbler build soonish. Any probs with running different height sections?
I have been gifted enough copper for a combined blockhead deflag and 3 sections. I plan on no sight glasses on the sections and using expandon ferrules.
Then buying two complete tees from mac for a sight glass top and bottom.
My sections will only be 100 think macs are 150mm from memory?. Alright to mix them up? Doing single 2" cap on mine will eventually have 4 sections and when i get brave will atempt sight glasses. Oh and will have two sets plates one set macs and one set with the single caps. Packed section down the track

Different heights on your plates won't be a problem in my opinion. Good to see you're getting into a bubbler, you won't be disappointed. I'm assuming she'll be a solid plate tree and not a glasser?

Will be modules but no sight glasses at this stage.(copper is in short lengths) By buying two of macs gives me one sight glass bottom and one top..

I'm sure technically in some way the different sizes would be detrimental but I recon on our small scale stills it really would make sweet F A difference and I wouldn't let it worry you. Run with it I say :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hey bluc, I think the different sizes won't make much difference.

I've read that a few people who have 100mm spacing can't quite run as fast as 150mm spacing due to entrainment/splashing from one plate to the next which can smear tails prematurely if run over say 3Lt/hr.
That said I've never run at 3Lt/hr and been happy with the result and mine is 150mm spacing.
So I say go for it and if you find your a bit short of copper or you balls a piece up give me a shout as I still have a cpl short pieces I could help you out with might be a good chance to see how your choc whiskey is aging.

Yep, the shorter sections will limit the speed of the still. If they don't have sight glasses it'll be harder to know when you're running them too hard but I've always worked it out with my two bubblers (no sight glasses at all). 100 mm will be fine.

equipment: Eve - 4" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (sieve plates), 330 mm packed section on a keg boiler with 2 x 2000 W elements.
Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.
