Double distilling

Postby austenpowers » Sat Aug 12, 2017 8:39 pm

So im way over carbon filtering and have about 9 ltrs of 95% up my sleeve from turbos. Can i just bring it down to say 25% or 15% with tap water and run it through again?

Then i would have run it twice watered it down with good filtered water back to 35% -40% , no carbon just mix and drink ? Yeah?

Can i

Yes as long as its 40% or less and do cuts to improve it. Dont just collect and keep or you will achieve nothing..

The more you distill it, the better it gets. But you loose a bit on the way mate. As Bluc said, cut as you go and you will end up with good booze :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Not sure what's going on here mate
It might be the turbo but I've not heard of a burt smell from them before, more a chemical smell. If your getting oily taste maybe your going too far into tails? That may even be your burnt smell? Did you try doing cuts?

I'd be thinking still problem. I'm not sure what your still is sorry, I've tryed googling it but nothing came up so can't help there sorry. Does your still have plastic components? Could they be leaching into your alc somehow?

I would suggest trying a TPW or a WBAB wash and try running that and see if you get the same result? If you do then you more than likely have a still problem.

What kind of packing is in this hacked euro still?
I had a mate complain about the same thing but he had a T500 and had never cleaned his ceramic packing, once cleaned everything improved

Did you do cuts, or just collect the lot on your second distillation?

Have you ever done a cleaning run on the still (vinegar, then alcohol)? viewtopic.php?f=57&t=2863

Ok i will have to update my profile ..euro still gone....

I built my own . Its 2" stainless with copper wound condensor on top but in the start of the 180 bend . The last 6" of the packed section is copper mesh . The rest of the colum is ss scrubbers 1.1 meter tall . Collecting temp is 77deg
Boiler starts about 88deg and finishes around 96deg . The boiler iz a cut down keg with 2400w element full capacity is 25 liters. Power controller runs a solid 8 most of the time. Parrot reads 94% while collecting but the alc temp would be lower than 20deg so dont know how accurate (massive condensor). No i dont do cuts my bad but im guessing im just gunnah have to start....

Cuts is where a lot of the magic happens. Oily stuff you mention sounds like the fusel oils(tails) :-B

There's your problem! Shit smells and shit tastes all from heads and tails. Try doing cuts mate and don't think of it as lost product as it’s not really prduct if it tastes like crap. Turf the first 200ml of the run and all your other heads and tails cuts can be run through again with the next distill run so you haven't really lost anything :handgestures-thumbupleft: give it a try you won't regret it.

Back in my turdbo days I found doing one distillation with good cuts then diluteing down ta 40%ABV and added soaking carbon and leaveing for a week or so ,then give ya still and packing a really good clean, then filter out the carbon thru a funnel with a fine mesh into ya boiler for the second run with good cuts gave a reasonable result.cheers hillzabilly ;-)

How much reflux are you running with 2000watts? Is the column insulated at that power?
Is it running like a reflux or more like a pot (no return to the column)? Is the burnt/oily smell and taste a new thing or have you just started learning this column?
If its reflux with a short column like that you will need good refluxing to clean the product up be for you start taking it off. Are you sure the thermometers accurate?
Worst case, carbon filter it and start fresh with non turbos.
