Can i store wet grain?

Postby bluc » Sun Aug 13, 2017 1:24 pm

Wondering can i safely store wet grain? Vac bag then freeze? Or should i re dry them in oven? Will have some when i do my all grain that would be perfectly fine for sugar heads..or do people here just ditch the spent grain? Just seems wasteful to ditch it when it still has heaps flavour.

I dump mine in a fermenter, top up with 10-15L water then dissolve 4kg of sugar, add 4-6L AG back set( I always have some saved in the freezer) then top up to 30Lusually get 7.5% or so, usually end up with about 23L of wash after racking. If I have the yeast cake from a AG ready to go I start it with that, otherwise Safspirit Malt Whisky Yeast. If you vac pack it and freeze it straight away it should be fine. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

fermenter's are tied up and no room to add more may just wait beginning to think it would be a hassle..

If you vacuum seal it then freeze it I'd say it should be OK.

If you've got a storage container other than your fermenters, you might be able to fill up with straight backset leaving no air -especially if it's just been boiled. If no storage, try to freeze (don't think it would have to be vacuum sealed).

You can still store it in your scotch backset off the previous run, then drain/strain the backset off the grain before next use in your new batch - basically no chill preserving/PH drop for keeping the grain clean.

I use my spent grains from my beer brewing process and add sugar as a sugar head wash. The taste is always different as I mix a few batches up each time - it always ends up as a "never never" vodka but taste really good. If you freeze your grains you should be good to go for your next wash, but I'm thinking, for the cost of the grains could you really be ferked freezing them?
