Help with Rye bourbon

Postby Sugardaddy » Mon Oct 23, 2017 3:48 pm

I wanted to make some Rye bourbon and can not seem to find a recipe. I have got myself a sack of Rye and plan to make a sugarhead type recipe.
Currently I am making BWKO and wondering would you just add Rye into the mix or would you replace one of the grain Conponents (wheat or barley) and replace that with the Rye malt

Would appreciate any feedback on procedures or if anyone has a bourbon Rye sugarhead recipe they wish to share....

I just replace the wheat in the BWKO. This is a copy of the grain bill of Tennessee type whiskey like Jacks and Turkey. It definitely changes the flavour from the original. I have heard and have found myself that rye needs time on oak to mellow that peppery flavour so just remember if it’s not quite right first up just put it away for a while and it will mellow out.

Good luck mate :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I've made some stuff that is off tap. 2.5l per corn 1l of rye 0.5l of barley to 4 kg of sugar. Those ratios worked really really well for me so well I had a custom 25l barrel made to bourbon specs for me to get an even more authentic bourbon flavor for me.

It's only been full since July but is already a beautiful dark color thanks to the rye. I haven't tasted yet was going to taste it round Christmas time.
