Good morning

We have been doing a bit of reading over the weekend and noticed that some of you are using those browny colour barrels (olive barrels) as fermenters. We would like to try this ourselves but want to add a tap to the barrel, what tap and connection to the barrel do you all suggest?

I use a pvc bulkhead fitting and screw a standard garden tap into it.

I like stainless myself, and would get something like this from your local HBS,they are a 1/2inch ball valve kit with bulkhead fitting screwed into the valve at about $20-$30 for converting stock pots ta mash tuns plus get a couple of good sized stainless washers helps in my opinion, all my fermenters and boilers have the same valves and are also fitted with camlock fittings and run silicone hose ,safe and easy for every aplication.Visit the HBS and have a snoop ifn you guys are unfamiliar with the gear required Vicki.cheers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

And use 3/4 taps unless you are pumping. Gravity through 1/2 inch is too slow.

The other bit of equipment I found very helpful when scaleing up to a 200lt fermenting vessel was a long paddle ,I made one from some stainless leftovers I had, thats about 140cm long with a 15cm by 30cm paddle blade welded on the end of a 1inch piece of stainless tube, makes dissolveing sugar ,stirring and degassing much easier, stainless is my standard but I do know one or two people that use an ex-canoo or kyak paddle as well and I think thats ok too, there are wooden mashing paddles available but I consider them to be problematic to keep clean and sanitized for fermenting without an added risk of contamination, wich for such large fermenters is going ta cost a lot more for a failier than a 25lt one.cheers hillzabilly ;-)
