Reading hydrometer

Postby Pist n broke » Sat Nov 18, 2017 9:08 pm

I have no idea how to read this thing... I am brewing beer and took reading at the start and it was 40.... or on the other side was 80.... shouldn’t it be 1000 or something?
It says it should be 990 when it’s ready...

If your reading 1040 at the start then probably reading correct if beer does not go to 1000 may want to look at software that calculates .

I am not trying to be a smart arse here, but are you sure it's an hydrometer and not an alcoholometer is it? Some alcoholometers will read proof on the other side which is double the ABV. I guess if contained in a tube it might read 40, if it had enough room it would most likely topple over in beer because of the SG being so high

An hydrometer should be giving you a reading to three decimal places, ie, 1.040 at the top of the scale does it have % and proof?

Yeah.. I got the right meter.. Once I saw the video it made sense but it helps when you put your glasses on...lol
I saw "40" but didn't realise that up the top of the meter it had 1000.... So it actually went 1010,1020,1030 and then 1040..... Bahahahhaha.....
