Red freckled krausen?

Postby Borneogoat » Tue Nov 21, 2017 8:21 am

I just laid down my first batch of Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka to make a boozy buffet of Xmas goodies with essences. I followed the recipe very closely. Only change was scaling up by 3.5x for a 80L batch. Used Woolies Homebrand bran (powder-like version), Home Brand white table sugar, 3x Swisse Men's Multivitamins (expensive, but in my cupboard), and a whole tin of Lowan's baker's yeast. The wash took off quickly and had a nice krausen within 15-30mins.

Odd to me, the karusen had red freckles! Little red dots floating on top of the foam. Is this some artifact of the vitamins, I've never used them before....

Nope, the external coating was kinda pale aqua-green. When I checked last night, the krausen with freckles had collapsed and the wash looked like you expect: tan color, cloudy, and very fizzy. It's fermenting well, so I'll just chalk it up to a natural wonder and call this batch Red Freckle Vodka!
