Stripping run out come

Postby Vicki55 » Wed Dec 20, 2017 5:44 pm

Merry xmas all

I have a quick question for all your great people.

My hubby just did a stripping run on our 2" pot still that consisted 1 x 45 liter and 1 x 25 liter washes of Teddy Sad's Fast Fermenting Vodka, he stripped down to 20% and really only got 10 liters of low wines @40% , does this sound right?

Is there any online calculator that will estimate the amount of low wines after a stripping run?

beginers section calculators
http://aussiedistiller.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=456 put in starting gravity of wash and finishing gravity and it will tell you the alcohol % of the wash. Then put that % in the water to distilate calculator and the % you are collecting at and it will give you the final volume of alcohol. Your final volume will actually be less if( and I hope you are) doing cuts :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Great thank you for that

Just hung up on one area

Starting gravity was 1.068 , finished at 0.990 giving 10.06% percent alcohol in 45 liters

In the Distillate to water calc
45l of 10.06% alcohol
Through a still that collects its distillate (default was 92%) do i choose the percentage i am going down to e.g 20%?

We are not doing cuts on stripping runs

Measure your low wines to get this figure :handgestures-thumbupleft:
In a pot most recipe i do I end up with 40% so that is the % it collects at, thats for a strip run. For a spirit run I normally get 75% after cuts before watering down. So to know my final volume(for x recipe) I would put in 75%.
If I was using a reflux still collecting at 95% you would put in 95%.
Either way you would end up with less due to heads and tails cuts but gives you a ballpark amount...

You soon get to know what % each recipe gives you and a ballpark final volume for each..

And no, cuts are not needed on stripping run :handgestures-thumbupleft: and that 40% in my example is combined low wines % not the abv I finish collecting at..

I have made Teddys for a couple of years and your figures sound on the low side for a 75 litre wash a good ABV would be 9/10 % that should give 14 litres at 40%abv so maybe the ferment somehow went astray, it is a great wash and oaks up to be a tidy bourbon :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thank you, we felt it was a little low, will have to investigate further
