PH Measurements

Postby JayTee » Sun Apr 08, 2018 6:12 pm

Hi - I'm just starting to make rum and note the importance of PH on successive rum generations. Two questions please:

1) What do peeps use to measure PH - paper strips or some sort of PH measuring device?
2) If there's a need to lower PH, is there a guideline on how many teaspoons of citric acid (for example) it might take to lower a certain volume of wash by 1 on the PH scale please?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

Something like this is what I bought from eBay. Could be cheaper options out there but the yellow ones would all be the same.
Most washes, especially rum, will be too acidic, calcium carbonate is best to raise the ph.

If your just starting, I wouldn't bother with the pH,

Lots of people have been making rum for a long time without worrying (me included).

Just don't add too much dunder to your generations :handgestures-thumbupleft:

When you're just starting out you really don' need to be worrying about PH and all that stuff. You're still gonna make good booze. It will just get better as you learn your craft. :handgestures-thumbupleft:
