Hi All,

Im looking at 2 kegs out the back and im considering adapting them to suit the long term ageing process as described in the Tried and proven hook rum recipes.

Has anyone modified a keg for long term storage and if so can you share some pics please?

Thanks Matt

flipped it added drain to original ferrule drilled hole in top(bottom) to fill. Eventually will put a 4" ferrule in to replace bung :handgestures-thumbupleft:

:laughing-rolling: looks like you washed that keg too often, blue! its shrunk... :teasing-tease:

Matt,
theres an awesome search function at the top of the Portal that'll allow you to find almost anything on this forum - chances are you haven't invented something new, but the only way you'll find out for sure is by having a look. Did a quick search and then selected 2 options that may be what you're looking for.

The first is a Thumper conversion that can be altered to suit your purpose, the second one is my favourite and something I'm gearing up to try soon:

Thumper fire extinguisher idea

My favourite: Fire Extinguisher storage

apart from blues effort, these are some alternatives... click the links and have some fun.

You could do what I did only on the larger 50l kegs

Thanks for the input guys, Bluc I love your modification! I use fire extinguishers to hold my low wines already, the woolies white vinegar caps are a low cost cap for storage : )

Thanks for the input! Keep it coming !

This is a 25 liter keg I modified to use for aging.

Cut a hole in the top just a little smaller than a 4 inch ferrule, sat the ferrule on top and used Harris solder to fix it in place then added a tap at the bottom.
The ferrule has two small pipes passing throuh, one short the other goes to the bottom of the keg, it is set up with a small vacuum pump.
