Gin questions

Postby Oldhoon » Wed Dec 19, 2018 8:20 pm

Hi
I have soaked some Gin botanicals on some neutral spirits and used to to flavor 1.2L of
spirits.

It has color in it but tastes ok.
I tried running through a carbon filter(stillspirits) and it hasnt made any difference??
I thought it would come out clear and a bit weaker?
Apart from distilling again(dont have enough) any way of clearing it up?

Cheers

Dilute to ~30% and re-distill. I did exactly that last night with about 750ml of 42%. Came through with flavour. But I leave the botanicals in the boiler, so if you have not got the botanicals, it may not do the job for you... Re-mascerate perhaps??

I do not see a problem with a little colour as long as its palateable, take it for what it is a lesson ,I tried fixing small amounts like that but most of the time it was just not worth it .cheers hillzabilly :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just drop some green or blue food dye in, looks deliberate that way, no one but you will know

I like your thinking rc Al but What about an ink gin copy.... Purple and reds are all the rage at the moment.

I would just go with the bottle colour...but if you feel it is a problem try 1 t o 2 drops of Cochaneal or other red food dye it will give a light pink gin like the new Beefeater pink... if you still have a prob P.M. me .... you could use Butterfly Pea, but that takes a bit of work.

wouldnt you call that a bath tub gin.

my understanding is bath tub gin is a style on its own should have a colour.

starwood distillery in Melbourne make a couple of bath tub gins both have quite bright colours and are very nice.
